As fans rally to bring #StarTrekLegacy to the forefront, It has brought up ideas on what the Legacy might mean for the next generation. And I don't mean the characters, I mean our future fans. One of the biggest differences with Legacy is how many women characters are on this potential show, and as a mom with a daughter, I find it important to have more of these kinds of series to show my daughter she can do anything she puts her mind to.
I have spoken before about how the key female leads of S3 of Star Trek: Picard meant not only to the fans but to the stories. What I find interesting now is how some characters paved the way for new female characters to shine. Dr. Beverly Crusher was the first CMO on the Starship Enterprise, a commander, scientist, and a single mother. Seven of Nine went from a destructive past with the Borg, to serving on a starship that was led by a woman, Kathryn Janeway (A first for us fans to see, plus Rachel Garrett) and now she has gone through the ranks of now captaining the newly christened Enterprise-G. We see that Sidney, Alandra, Ohk, Raffi, and many more, look up to those around them and continue that legacy.
Now, let's remember we had amazing characters at the beginning of Star Trek, with Uhura and Chapel from TOS and Crusher and Troi from TNG, but unfortunately, they were not written to the capacity we knew they could be. Misogyny and Sexism played a huge role in why, but it didn't deter the actors from playing them any differently and this is why they are so beloved to our fans today. As time has gone on we have seen Michael Burnham, Erica Ortegas, Una Chin-Riley, and Beckett Mariner, to name a few, that are being written far better than their predecessors. Having Star Trek: Legacy, will not only right the wrong that the legacy characters went through from their past shows, but It will showcase to our younger audience the mindset that you can do ANYTHING.
Have we peaked when it comes to equality? No, but we are far better in some cases than in others. One thing that Gene Roddenberry created and that has continued throughout the 900 episodes it has created, is that hope, respect, and kindness always win. The hope for a better future and the respect and kindness of anyone you come across. That is what we should strive for and that is what our Next Generation needs to learn and strive for as well.
I am biased when it comes to the idea of Star Trek: Legacy because of the character, Dr. Beverly Crusher, or should I say Admiral. She was a pivotal character for her time but never got to sink her teeth into great stories. I feel Legacy can fix that. Even though S3 had its flaws when it came to her story, It was still far better than some of what we got in the TNG days. Especially when Gates is concerned. She is more mature and brought that in her performance which caused the story (even the bad parts) to be brilliant. The way she approached the darker side of the series highlighted Beverly's past and pain, which is why so many fans want to see more of her. We want the stories to continue and we want Beverly to be fleshed out more. Same with Seven, who is a former Borg turned into Starfleet Captain is an amazing story in itself. It needs to be told.
Only time will tell, but I do hope those who are running Star Trek understand the importance of showcasing strong, independent women. They are the role models, the inspiration, and guidance. They are to show our next generation of fans to never give up hope. That, to me, is what is important.
